What’s the Deal with Deductibles?

LetsGetCredit.com Exclusive

You have no doubt heard of it. You have probably seen it on a tax form. Yet, you still may not be entirely sure of what a tax deductible is, how it works, and most of all, what in your life is tax deductible. This is a question people all over the country are asking themselves every year, and many of them may be missing items they did not know were included or simply never even considered them in the first place. The deductible is also a large reason why people seek means of help when tax season arrives, either from advanced computer software or through the help of a tax preparing company. The more knowledge one has about taxes, the more he or she is likely to get back in return.

A tax deduction is an expense that you acquire that will mean a lower taxable income. This is because your total amount of deductibles is subtracted from your total income. There are both standard deductions and itemized deductions. A standard deduction is the basic way of calculating all your deductions and is the most popular method used by taxpayers. Itemizing is a little more tedious, in which you list each deduction on your individual tax return and subtract that from your gross income. Sometimes itemizing can lead to a lower taxable income, but generally it depends upon your current lifestyle and situation.

When people think of deductibles, they most often think of charities. While giving to a charity is a tax deduction, it is not the only one. However, there are a number of items that are deductible as long as you know what to look for.

The taxpayer’s spouse, child, and any other dependents as well as those who have certain disabilities can mean an exemption amount and thus a deductible.

Mortgage, home equity loan, and home equity line of credit interest on any residence you may have.

Businesses can allow for many deductions; mileage, individual expenses resulting from that business, the startup costs of your business, the operation expenses of the business, and farming expenses.

Union dues, and clothing, uniforms, and other accessories you must purchase for your line of work.

Certain amounts of medical expenses and the cost of eliminating any barriers for people who are disabled or elderly (in relation to a building or other structure that inhibits such a person).

Moving expenses, job search expenses, and educational expenses.

These are several of the ways in which you may realize you have more deductions than you thought. A skilled tax preparer should ask for this information, but you have to be aware that every year tax laws and regulations fluctuate or change, so what may have given you a large return one year may not offer to much the next year. Taxes may be as certain as life and death, as they say, but that does not mean they are always stable.

If you think something is deductible, do not be afraid to ask. You work hard for every penny of your money, and there is nothing wrong with getting as much back as you can.
