The Haven of Credit Counseling

LetsGetCredit.com Exclusive

When you realize you have a mountain of credit card debt, you may get quite panicky in a short amount of time. Other people may end up in denial, silently stressing and paying minimum payments, all the while racking their brain for some method of escape. Everyone deals with stress in different ways, but stressing about your debt is not going to make it go away.

There is help if you know where to look. In fact, credit debt help is actually easy to find. Because we are a nation so in debt, credit counseling agencies have begun advertising so people are more aware they exist. Credit counseling can benefit you in many ways. If you have already called your credit card companies and tried to negotiate for better rates and options that will assist you as you try to get out of debt, then credit counseling may be able to do what you could not.

Credit counseling is completely free. They are non-profit companies meant to help people, so if you call a credit counseling agency that demands money, hang up the phone immediately. Many credit agencies that ask for payment are scams, though some out there offer extreme professional services - but you don’t want to spend any more money. If you think you have found a magical credit repair agency that will spruce up your credit report, that too is a scam. Nothing will help you with debt except the hard work you put into erasing it.

Credit counselors you speak with will also contact your creditors. From there, they negotiate better terms in order to help you manage your money better, have more time to pay them, and feel more relaxed about your debt. The counselors will use what information you give them about your debt, payments, and so forth, and from there they can talk to creditors to lower payments, waive extra fees and charges, eliminate interest charges, and stop bill collectors from calling you. Creditors utilize pressure in order to get you to pay, but you know it is only making you anxious; you do not have a money tree in your back yard and have other expenses that must be paid as well.

Credit counseling can also help you if you need ideas on how to better manage your money. People who file for bankruptcy are required to get counseling so they do not fall into debt again. Getting even a few ideas on how to save, halt excess spending, better understanding how your credit cards work, and what types of payment you should use for various expenditures can add up to a lot of money fairly quickly. You may be surprised how much you could save if you avoided spending an extra few bucks on junk food every week, or stopped paying $80 for a pair of “designer” jeans.

If you find yourself slowly slipping into debt, get counseling before it gets worse. Even if everyone around you is in debt, it does not mean you have to be as well.
